Today, I’m going to share my experience at the recently concluded Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) 2024, held at SMX Manila. I attended on Days 1, 2, and 4. Day 1 was Wednesday, and I planned to go on weekdays because, based on my experience, the crowds are smaller, making it easier to move around the venue.
MIBF 2024 spanned two floors: the first floor was dedicated to books, while the second floor featured children’s books and the comics section. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the first floor since my main interest was in the comics section. I arrived around 1 PM and had the chance to interview Ezjae Zemana, a comics creator also known as “Panitikanerd.” I also caught up with friends who were present at the event. Among the exhibitors I saw were Komikon, Komiket, Avenida, Kawangis Publishing, Comic Odyssey, Sinegang, Manix, and many more.
On the second day, I also consigned my Sikami comics and art prints at the Libreriangelo booth in the Kawangis Publishing area. Later, I attended some talks. Before heading home, I had another interview with Sampay, one of the best up-and-coming comics creators in the local scene. We talked about his process and his latest work with Rexy Dorado from Maharlika Komiks.
On the fourth day, my wife and I went back to fetch our parents, who wanted to see the event and buy some books. The crowd was intense that day, so we decided to have an early dinner at Conrad Hotel, located just behind SMX. We had a great meal at the Hard Rock Cafe. Afterward, we explored Mall of Asia briefly before heading home.
Overall, MIBF 2024 was a fantastic event. I was thrilled to see so many Pinoy Komiks represented at the venue. I’m looking forward to attending more events like this in the future.
